Is Time Travel really possible? I thought about this question some years ago, and of course it has already been proven that it is possible. I am sure many would have heard or read about the story of the two planes.

Apparently, someone tried to prove that it is actually possible to travel to the future and this happens when you are traveling at a very high speed. According to Mr. Albert Einstein’s Law of Relativity, he says that as you travel faster, closer to the speed of light, time actually slows down. So if put in the right perspective, since your time is slower while the current time is actually still constant, it could be said that he has in fact experience a time traveling into the future. Easy? That means to the person traveling at the very fast speed, to him, everything seems to be moving slightly faster.

In an experiment to prove the point, a fighter jet plane was prepared with one atomic clock on its seat and another one on the ground. Atomic clocks are known to be very accurate down to the very small denominations. Thus, if the theory proves to be wrong, there should not be a slightest change in the reading of the atomic clock. And so the test starts, with the plane flying beyond the speed of sound for some time before they land. When they land, the clock was taken out and the readings checked. Surprised or not, there was a very slight difference in the readings, it appears that the clock on the plane had slowed down. Although it has been proven, but looking at such a small difference when already traveling at such top speed, it seems that it might not been within our grasp to time travel just yet.

In another experiment, a dog was sent in a pod at high speed up into space for quite a numbers of years. It was thought that the dog's age would not change. However, when examined, the dog does not seem to age as much as Earth.

All this only prove that we are able to time travel, but only to the future. So is it possible to time travel to the past? Some say that it is not possible, while others have come out with some theories that support this view. Some examples are block universe, parallel universe, string theory and also the possibility that new universes are created as people travel into the past. It is not as simple as traveling to the future due to many complications and also the fact that time travels in a linear fashion, forward. Thus when you go back in time and change something, isn’t something going to be change in the present or the future. These are the exact issue that the movie “Back to the future” talks about. It shows us how the subtle things that we do like talking to a person could transform into a huge difference in your actual world if you do return.

However, all this being said is naught if time traveling into the past is not even possible. Recently I read an article that says, “Time travel would be possible in months” My first thought was that this title is so misleading. It might be possible, but certainly not for us!

As I said earlier that as you travel at close to the speed of light, you would be able to time travel. However, some say that if you travel at the speed of light, time actually come to a stand still or be able to appear everywhere at the same time. And if you actually travel faster than the speed of light, everything starts to move backwards and then you might be able to travel to the past. How true is all this? No one knows. No one will know because it is difficult to get to that kind of speed and also maintain it. If you look at Einstein’s E = MC2 , you will realize that to get to the speed of light (C), the equation would be √(E/M). It has been said that you would need the entire energy of the entire universe and also the mass would be totally huge if you actually travel at the speed of sound. Thus it is simply impossible to even travel to the speed of light. Unless you are talk about experimenting with atoms etc, or black holes.

Now the article talks about black holes as a form of time traveling. To be precise, it talks about worm holes. Black holes have entrances, you cross the event horizon but you will never return. While worm holes have both an entrance and exit. Thus, you can enter and appear out of somewhere or sometime, hopefully still intact. People link black holes and worm holes with time travel because firstly, it is still very mysterious, even light cannot escape it once cross the event horizon. Secondly there is so much negative energy concentrated in the very small space. It is the place that I can think of if you want to travel at the speed of light, or better, past the speed of light.

Black holes are also not very easy to spot. Needless to say about spotting worm holes. Till today, it has not been proven that worm holes even exist. It remains a hypothesis. Maybe one of these days we can travel to the past. It might be a cool idea, but before anything, should we ask why we are traveling to the past?
