What is the world watching?

Recently in April, the MIPTV was being help in Cannes, with over $10 billion in transactional business done. It is essentially a content event for co-producing, buying, selling, financing and distributing entertainment content. It provides the people involved in the TV, film, digital and audiovisual content, production and distribution industry a market conference and networking forum to discover future trends and trade content rights on a global level.

The local reporter had been there for four days from April 7th - 11th exploring and stopping by every single booth from over 100 countries, understanding exactly what sells in entertainment programs.

At first hand, everyone know that variety shows sells best generally, but it is such a broad category. So according to recent trends, reality shows are becoming more widely viewed and favorite by many. The local shows tend to focus using competition as a theme, which tend to lack content. However, at the entertainment market and trade event, the reporter manage to get some finds.

1. World's Worst

  • About what? -> Every episode focus on different daily life skills, but picking on world's worst. Some are the worst homemaking housewife, the worst culinary skill husband, or the scariest driver, worst actors acting, worst in-laws, worst boss, most mischievous child, etc. Anyone can nominate anyone, families, friends or strangers.
  • What's cool? -> People are good at spotting the best, but when it come to the worst, they can be as good.

2. The Underdog Show

  • About what? -> Putting celebrities and untrained or abandoned dogs together for six weeks, and at the end, experts and the audiences would judge them. When the show finishes, the participating dogs would up for bid to be adopted.

  • About what? -> 5000 hopeful candidates undergo a three month rigorous training to being a star announcer.
  • What's cool? -> Sing, act, host, comedy, dance, pageant, all have been seen, but not announcer competing. Besides anchor work, audiences also understand how the media choose and report news.

4. Desperate Learners
  • Whose idea? -> Australia
  • About what? -> Find all the Australians who spend the most time and money, take the most test on learning to drive and getting their license. Despite this, they still fail to get past driving lessons and find out for they eventually fulfill their dreams.

  • About what? -> 3 guys, 3 ladies choose who they want to date. Later issues such as sex, work, play, health, family, looks, assets, financial will come into play.

  • About what? -> Elementary students choose their single teachers future dating partners. At the end, it will be up to the students to pair them up too.

  • About what? -> First, put two phones in anywhere in two corners of a city. When the show starts, the phone rings and whoever picks up the phone would stand a chance to win 50,000 Euros prize money. On the other end of the phone, instructions would be given to complete 5 missions, and whoever finishes first wins.

8. Cash Cab

  • About what? -> Any passenger unknowingly becomes part of the show when they enter this particular cab. Before they realise it, they are already on the screens. Before reaching their destination, the more questions they answer correctly asked by the driver, the more money they win. The level of difficulty would increase slowly, and if one gets three wrong, the person must get down the cab no matter where they are.

  • About what? -> Harsh criticsused to celebrities wearing high fashion. This show not only priase or critic but also offer insights to current fashion. They use computer to "strip" celebrities of their tasteless clothings to don appropriate clothes.
  • What's cool? -> Besides entertaining, also constuctive.

10. Chain Gang Girls
  • Whose idea? -> United States of America
  • About what? -> in a rehabitation facility, 15 girls are chained to each other despite their age, background, or crime commited. So if one needs to visit the loo, all will follow suit and if one walks slowly, all cannot speed up their pace. Sometimes, opinions and characters will crash and they are all being tested emotionally. In the end, will these girls develop feelings for one another?
  • What's cool? -> Fighting over opinions, also leaves one pondering..

11. Court in the Act
  • Whose idea? -> Germany
  • About what? -> Every episode, two actors begin four rounds of contests. The first round is deals with issues surrounding Christmas, how to lie a cop, how to change seat when beside someone with body odour, etc.. Other rounds incude other accused offering amusing defence notes, real international cases, or judges saying something different for judgement, etc..
  • What's cool? -> Classics shows.

  • Whose idea? -> New Zealand
  • About what? -> Using a special "Formula for human behaviour" as a meter for how much a family or any member waste on the Earth's resources. Also provides alternatives to reduce our rubbish. In the end, prizes are given away to those who save enough resources, literally turning rubbish to "gold"!
  • What's cool? -> Helps educating the public on the right way of dealing with resources wastage and rubbish problems.

13. Workplace Makeover
  • Whose idea? -> Germany
  • As it title suggests, turn your boring office into a modern workplace. Unsatisfied employees can appy for company, and the show would send interior designers, interior landscape experts, health and safety experts and host etc. down to the scene. They will discuss and start put their plans in action.
  • What's cool? -> Enough of home makeovers, now is the time for your workplace too.
